The Vanishing Half

Storyboard-Text

  • Actions- After learning about Reese's transformation from Therese and Jude reflects on how she knows it's possible to be two people in one lifetime. She'd tried to find whom she thought her true self to be. Bennett states, “She’d tried to lighten her skin once, during her first summer in Mallard” (Bennett 105). She knows it'd be difficult to be light like her mother, but a child's mind and actions always reflect their inner thoughts.
  • Dislikes - . Jude and her grandma witness Early shower her mother with affection in each of his passings. Jude thinks, "She didn’t know who she wanted to be in that moment—Early or her mother, beautiful or beholding—and she’d felt so sick with longing that she turned away” (Bennett 90). Jude yearns for softness, but only gets tormented and insulted. She accepts that she will not receive such affection due to her difference in appearance.
  • Effect on others- Mallard isn't used to people being darker than a greek complexion at most, but a blue-black baby was absurd. The people of Mallard did not expect Desiree to stay, but she did. Bennett states, "They weren't used to having a dark child amongst them and were surprised by how much it upset them" (Bennett 64). Jude is a child no older than 12 years old and Mallard citizens feel she is a stain to their perfection. A child who had done no harm, simply existeing in their town.
  • Key Statements - Mallard, a place Kennedy has never been to and where Jude never wants to return. Kennedy's inquiry about a perfect place leads to Jude's harsh statement. She states, "They only like light Negroes out there. You’d fit right in” (Bennett 295). The abruptness of Jude's statement is due to her experience in Mallard. She needed no further thought to describe the close-minded place and inform her cousin of it in as little phrasing as possible.
  • Discussion - Love is a complicated and improperly addressed emotion in the relationship between Desiree and Jude. When Jude tells her mother that Reese loves her and after she asks, “Do you think..she paused, scraping the celery into a bowl. “Do you think Daddy loved you?... Do you think he loved me? (Bennett 337)". Jude is curious whether her abusive father truly loved her or her mother because of his actions.
  • Thoughts- School photos never captured her true beauty. Jude was always darker or only her eyes and teeth were visible. Jude ponders, "The camera, Reese told her once, worked like the human eye. Meaning, it was not created to notice her” (Bennett 108). Jude believed she was not pretty enough to draw attention or be captured in her essence. The camera to Jude was something meant for fair-skinned individuals.
