Chernobyl, U.S.S.R (Ukraine), April 26, 1986. 2 miles south of Pripyat. 69 miles north of Kiev. 10 miles south of Belarus border.
Routine shutdowns are taking place in the Chernobyl power plant. The tests are to determine if the turbines can produce enough electricity to keep coolant pumps running before the backup generators turn on. Reactors 1, 2, 3 had all been successful. Unfortunately, the test for reactor four was delayed, and the less experienced night shift was to run the tests.
It was known that the tests for reactor four were delayed to a later time so the region could receive an adequate amount of power. When the test was able to be carried out, the night shift was now running the plant. The night shift was inexperienced and had not received proper instructions on how to carry out the test.
The local Soviet officials near the plant were called to an emergency meeting to discuss the situation. They came to an agreement to block all roads in and out of Pripyat with a road block, and to not let anyone find out the situation that was unfolding. Neither the officers, nor the people living nearby were aware of the situation. Reactors 1, 2, and 3 are all shutdown, but they would go on to be reopened just a few short months after the incident.

It took 36 hours for officials to inform the public about the disaster at Chernobyl. 115,000 people were evacuated from Pripyat and the surrounding villages. People were not allowed to bring very much with them, and had little time to prepare. The May Day festival in Kiev was not canceled, despite pushes to do so. A few day after the disaster Mr. Gorbachev said the worst was behind them. The impact was reduced by desperately dumping substances to slow down radiation leaking, and the sacrifices of brave souls who went into the heart of the reactor to save many people.
An estimated 4,000 direct Chernobyl-related deaths. The UN estimates that 3.5 million have been affected by the radiation blowing into neighboring countries. Everyone exposed to the radiation in the plant was at an increased risk for cancer and other health problems. Surrounding saw an increase in thyroid cancer in children. The surrounding forest and wildlife were exposed to massive amounts of radiation. The surrounding forest was red immediately after the accident, but it grew back better after it was bulldozed and replanted. People today are still affected from the radiation that is still coming from the plants. Wind blows the radiation all across Europe.
