The maiden had not, however, and reported his crime to the King and Queen. It was up to queen Guinevere to decide his crime. She gave him a year and a day to find out what women wanted most, or else he would be beheaded.

As the year and a day came to and end, the knight still had not been given a straight answer. Every man he asked gave him a different one.

On his way back, caught up in his defeat, the knight met an old lady who told him she would give him the answer to the Queens question, but ONLY if he would do the next thing she asked for.

When the knight proclaimed that the thing women want most in the world is freedom, and no one argued, his life was saved. The old lady then chose that moment to request that he MARRY HER! the knight was forced to accept, much to his dismay.
In their marriage bed, the old lady said he could either have her as is, and she would take care of him, or she could be beautiful but never trusted. The knight chose her as she is, and then she transformed into a beautiful maiden.
