Hi, I am Nick and this is my story about my own identity and how I dealt with confusion about my ethnicity and race.
All my life I had been confused about my race, I am mixed half Hispanic and raised by my Mexican family. However the kids at my schools would look down on me and say hurtful things to me like slurs and other offensive things.
As a white passing Hispanic man however, anytime I tried to express my culture those same guys told me I wasn't Mexican and I was just a white man. This idea confused me and made me question my identity. I was raised in a Mexican household with customs, music, and food that was not traditionally American or white for that matter.
I had a major identity crisis during highschool and at times was unsure if I could even call myself a hispanic man at all.
My grandmother eventually helped clear my head of anxiety by telling me that I may look white but that I was raised around her culture and that will always be a part of my life
I understand now that I am a white passing hispanic man. The fact that I am white passing is a priveledge that I live with that many in my family and community do not have. While I have that priviledge I still remeber my ethnic identity, the identity that my grandmother helped to create from a young age.
