Stella characterization storyboard

Storyboard-Text

  • Stella often thinks and dreams about the violent past that haunts her, as Bennett writes, "Her nightmares were always the same, white men grabbing her ankles and dragging her screaming out of the bed" (Bennett 150). Her thoughts are composed of both the sexual abuse she suffered and watching her father being lynched. She is still unconsciously paranoid that men are out to hurt here even in the new life she has created.
  • Stella loves the act of becoming a white woman and the privilege that comes with it, as Bennett writes, "...and walked right up to the main entrance, not the side door where Negroes lined up in the alley. Nobody stopped her... There was nothing to being white except boldness" (Bennett 149). When visiting the South Louisiana Museum of Art, Stella enters as a white woman in order to avoid the long lines, feeling the power that comes with her performance. She has adopted a new life to suit her desire for comfortability and mobility.
  • Colored
  • As it is made clear in the novel, Stella is a miserable character who lies to keep her life afloat, seen through the line which says, "But sometimes lying was an act of love. Stella had spent too long lying to tell the truth now, or maybe, there was nothing left to reveal. Maybe this was who she had become" (Bennett 259). Stella has lied throughout all of her second life that she has become convinced it is now an act of love which protects her family. When Kennedy continues to press her about the information Jude told her, Stella prolongs her state of denial in order to erase her past life, and has become nothing more than a fake.
  • "We wouldn't lie to you."
  • What does the character think about?
  • More than anything, Stella is a master of deception and her ability to separate and perform multiple identities, as Bennett writes, "Sometimes she wondered if Miss Vignes was a separate person altogether. Maybe she wasn't a mask that Stella put on. Maybe Miss Vignes was already a part of her, as if she has been split in half. She could become whichever woman she decided, whichever side of her face she tilted to the light" (Bennett 189). Stella considers what her life would look like if she remained "Miss Vignes", though recognizes that she can become either woman upon her own choosing. Stella has spent most of her life pretending to be someone else, a skill she has mastered in order to protect her true self.
  • What does the character love?
  • What kind of person are they?
  • After the truth of her friendship with Loretta is revealed to the neighborhood, Stella takes steps to denounce the fact, saying, "But a week after Christmas, sitting around her sewing circle, she told Cath Johansen and Betsy Roberts that he made her uncomfortable..."I just never liked the way he looked at me."" (Bennett 200). Stella not only denied the friendship at her Christmas party, but even went as far as to give Reggie a bad reputation in order to protect herself. She feeds into gossip during her sewing circle to make it appear that she doesn't like the Walkers',, causing them to eventually leave the neighborhood when their harassment continues. Stella takes these ill-intended actions to separate herself from the Walkers and hide the fact that she too is black.
  • What actions do they take?
  • What do they do well?
  • What is something they cannot do?
  • Something Stella cannot do is confide in someone, especially her twin sister, about the truth of her sexual assault, as Bennett writes, "Even in their darkened bedroom, even to Desiree, Stella couldn't bring herself to say. She always wanted to believe that there was something special about her but she knew that Mr. Dupont only picked her because he sensed her weakness. She was the twin who wouldn't tell" (Bennett 155). As Stella herself notes, Mr. Dupont preyed upon her to become his victim for the mere fact that she wouldn't tell about it. Because she is unable to seek help for her trauma, she has lived a long life of suffering with this baggage without properly healing from it. This is also the catalyst for making Stella finally agree to leave Mallard with Desiree.
