- Misery, yet again, for Puerto Ricans still recovering from Maria
- Many people of Puerto Rico during the hurricane were trapped and sensed immediate danger similar to that of Hurricane Maria. Residents were scared and preparing for the worst with flashbacks and experience to aid them.
- Introduction
- Puerto Rico was recently hit with Hurricane Fiona, powerful enough to match Hurricane Maria of 2017 when it hit PR. Today, we're taking a look at real peoples experiences vs. what we've seen in the media.
- According to Politico.com, power lines throughout the island fell through causing a power outage. Their power grid is fragile since it was destroyed in Hurrican Maria. Attention being brought to the Biden Administration was the best chance for them to get the funds for necessary emergency measures.
- VISUAL BIAS
- The damages of Hurricane Fiona touches similarity to Hurricane Maria, now five years later. News outlets are highlighting the negative impacts that show cases Puerto Rico as vulnerable and helpless. Many reports include key words such as misery, disaster, etc.
- COMMERCIALBIAS
- While damages are severe, including flooded homes and damaged property, most visuals portray only that. Distress and damage can be visualized without a picture. News outlets such as the Weather Channel, which published Correa's story, and CNN focus on the sadness behind the people of PR. Whereas music videos such as Bad Bunny's El Apagon strengthens the idea of community even through the hardest times.
- vs.
- Articles featuring talk about the Biden Adminstration showcases their actions in a positive light, leaving readers to believe everthing is being taken care of. Almost portrayed as heroic, readers can favor the presidency in handling natural disasters. Meanwhile, Puerto Ricans are only left to wait patiently and work cautiously to recover from damages.
