In 1830, the Indian Removal Act was a law passed by the U.S. government .It authorized the federal government with the ability to negotiate with Native American tribes living the southeastern U.S. to move west of the Mississippi River to the land that present -day Oklahoma.

In 1838, the Cherokee was forced to be removed from their land in Georgia.However other tribes, were also forced to move west and suffered similar hardship .The Native been forced to leave their land so that AMerican can acquire the land and resources .

The journey was extremely difficult and dangerous , Many Cherokee people were forced to walk hundreds of miles , with very little food , medicine, and shelter .As a result, thousands of Native Americans died from disease, hunger, and exhaustion along the way .The Trail of Tears is one of the most tragic events in U.S. history, as it led to the loss of life and destruction of Native American culture .
