Fever 1793 is a book about a girl named Mattie who went through yellow fever and her struggles along the way. My favorite scene in Fever 1793 is when Mattie goes to the market before her mother gets sick. At the beginning of the story, Mother needs to go to the market to buy food supplies for the coffeehouse. Mattie’s grandfather suggested Mattie go so she can get sunlight and fresh air. Mattie is at the market buying vegetables and fruits for the coffee house. While she did this, she had candy in her mouth that she had gotten from her grandfather. She quickly spat it out after tasting the tobacco that was stuck to the side of it. While she’s there, Nathaniel comes up to her. She realized he was flirting with her more than usual. He even walked her home. This scene is important to the story because it shows you how life used to be before the yellow fever epidemic.

Moo!
Ew tabacco on the candy grandfather gave me. He always has tabocco in his pocket.

I thought I might be able to show my elbows around Nathaniel, but his smile just gave me chills. Maybe I can't!
It's so good to see you. Do you want to come fishing with me?
