In Gideon V. Wainwright, Gideon was arrested for stealing 65 dollars and liquor. He was forced to represent himself in court because Florida denied Gideon a court-appointed lawyer because Florida only gives lawyers in Capital cases, this was a felony case. Gideon appealed to the Supreme Court, and the Supreme Court sided with Gideon and determined the Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to free legal counsel in all cases; this was applied to all states through the 14th Amendment. Gideon was given a retrial with a lawyer and was found not guilty. This case specified that everyone has the right to a lawyer, and even if they can't afford it, the state has to give one to them.
