Rome was founded in Italy, which is a peninsula in the Mediterranean Sea. It is surrounded by islands. It started on the banks of the Tiber River.
When Romulus and Remus were born there father Mars, the god of war, thought that they would take his throne when they grew up so he ordered them to be drown in the Tiber River. That's when a wolf rescues them. So they decided to create a town on the banks of the Tiber River, Romulus killed Remus and named the city Rome.
The Etruscans used the arches and the cuniculus. The Arches rested on two pillars, they had wedge-shaped stones helped support it, and they had a keystone to keep all of the other stones in place. The cuniculus was a underground trench, there where vertical shafts connecting to the ground above.
They had slaves fight to the death at funerals. The winner of the fights was executed. They also had Gladiators, they were professionally trained to fight each other and wild animals. They also had chariot races.
The Greeks constructed temples for the gods, these temples had columns to add to the beauty. The Romans tried to use concrete to build stadiums like the Colosseum. The Colosseum was a stadium that held more than 200,000 people, this is where people watched gladiators fights, The Circus Maximus, and chariot races.

The romans admired the Greeks pottery, painting, and sculptures. The Greeks influence on the Romans painting and sculpture was so great that they called it Greco-Roman art. The Romans used some of Greeks gods and gave them Roman names.
