The narrator killed the old man and hid his body
The narrator couldn't keep up his lie so he confessed his crime to the police.
Police arrived at the old man's house to investigate the complaint of a neighbor.
As the bell sounded the hour, there came knocking at the the street door. I went down to open it with a light heart,- for what had I now fear?
