jaja and Kambili are not used to being in an environment where they're free to laugh, or to enjoy themselves. They're conditioned to stay silent and to obey. They're having a hard time trying to adjust themselves at Aunty Ifeoma's. While Aunty Ifeoma's household is used to being loud and proud, Jaja and Kambili are used to their silent, restricting environment at home.

I was 10 years old when I missed two questions on his catechism test and was not named the best in the First Holy Communion class. Papa ended up breaking my finger and now my finger is deformed.
Jaja explained to Aunty Ifeoma before about his deformed finger. Chima brings it back up again, asking him about his deformed finger. Papa's violence goes further, where he'd risk hurting his family just to reinforce his rules and show that he has power over them.

While at Aunty Ifeoma's house, Jaja and Kambili received a letter from Papa. The letter reminds them that Papa has control over them, how he is watching them despite the fact that he isn't here with them.
