In the real world today, people can't just search your house without a search warrant. It's not fair to the person living in the house to have their house searched for no reason. The Fourth Amendment protects this right.

Hey, that's not fair! That's way too long! I didn't even do that much! There must be some kind of limit.
In the real world today, people have to have some kind of limit on how long they're in jail for. Also, if people want to get out of jail sooner, they have to pay money. People usually go to jail for a few months to a year for vandalism. People shouldn't go to jail for the rest of their lives just for vandalism. It's not very fair.
