- In the 17th century there was a war between Great Britain France and Spain. There were 4 different wars in India and North America. The winner were to gain supremacy in the west and dominate the lucrative colonial trade.
- The French provoked the war by building forts in the Ohio river Valley. They did this to halt the growth of the British Colonies. To win control over the river, George Washington was sent to achieve this task. The different military's had a final fight for the empire when they met in the wilderness.
- The British government called for representatives from several colonies to meet at congress in Albany 1754. Benjamin Franklin developed a planfor an intercolonial government and a system for recruiting troops and collecting taxes from the various colonies for their common defense. Although the plan was not adopted, it was animportantevent because it lead to future congress meetings.
- In 1755 General Braddock led a force of 1,500 British regulars and Virginia militiamen out of Fort Cumberland in western Maryland, intending to oust the French from Fort Duquesne, 50 miles to the west.As the French and Indians fanned out to attack from the woods, the British troops (George Washington reported) “were struck with such a panic that they behaved with more cowardice than it is possible to conceive.
- Since French Colonists lived side by side with the Native Americans, most of sided with France. However some tribes did fight alongside Britain. . The Iroquois Confederacy, initially neutral, eventually allied with the British in 1758, while the Algonquins, their traditional rivals, backed the French.
- The British believed the Colonists to be poorly trained, and disorderly rabble. Some of the colonies did contribute a thing to the war. While the colonists gained much confidence. They believed they developed leadership among themselves, and were not impressed by Britain's troops.
