One of the main themes in The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is mankind is it's own enemy. Starting off, after Les Goodman's car suddenly erupted with life everyone started to converge around him(76).It shows that just because Goodman's car started not even with him at the wheel everyone started a bunch of attacks to Goodman. Next, when Charlie accused Steve of not being above suspicion, and Don adding that Steve's wife was talking behind his back(81). It shows that no one trusted anyone, but everybody was really quick to jump to conclusions and extremely good at blaming each other. Lastly, at the end everyone started attacking everybody and chaos erupted(85). It tells us that instead of the residents of Maple Street being calm, and figuring out the problem, start fighting, and arguing with each other. In conclusion One of the themes for The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is Mankind is its own enemy.
