In The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Mankind are their own worst enemy. I used Mankind are their own worst enemy as my theme because there was a lot of evidence to support my theme. My first piece of evidence was from pages 73-74, and my evidence was when everyone on Maple Street became suspicious of each other, when Tommy claimed aliens were responsible for the power outage. This supports my theme because the residents of Mable Street could not trust each other even though they knew and lived with each other for years.My second piece of evidence was from pages 75-76, and my evidence was when the people of Maple Street, almost mobbed Les Goodman because of his car starting on its own. This supports my theme because the residents did not think rationally, because instead they became fearful and scared, which is what led them to think there were monsters in their town. My third and last piece of evidence was from pages 84-85, and my evidence was when the residents of Maple Street turned on each other and started killing one another. This evidence supports my theme because the people started killing each other just over an electricity outage.
