Storyboard-Text

  • The Turn is shown in line 12 of this poem. The tone and mood of the poem are refocused as a result of this Turn. The mood of the poem becomes increasingly grim as the poet anticipates their own death. The poet asks that their loved ones not mourn for them or remember their name, as they do not want to give them any sorrow or suffering. As the poet urges for their loved ones not to mourn for them, the mood shifts to desperation. As a result, the poet is more concerned about the reputation of their loved ones than about their own.
  • The quoted line is essential in the poem since it reveals the narrator's actual anxieties. Throughout the poem, the author urges loved ones not to mourn. As a result, it's plausible that the author seemed to have a bad reputation. The author explains how they want to shelter their loved ones, even if it means asking them to forget about them once the narrator dies. The narrator is afraid that if the world learns that their loved one is weeping for them, they will be ridiculed as well. This establishes the concept of reputational deterioration.
  • Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
  • And mock you with me after I am gone.
  • Throughout the poem, the quoted line provides insight into the narrator's anxiety. This phrase continues the idea that the poet has a negative reputation by providing an explanation of how the poet thinks. The author states that they want to protect their loved ones, despite having to beg their loved ones to forget about them once the narrator dies. If the youth does not accomplish this, the speaker believes that the world will try to use him against their loved one in some way. People will discover why the loved one is grieving and make fun of him or her for being the narrator's friend. In other words, his or her reputation will decline, and reputational degradation will continue.
