Hello Class, Today I will be introducing a new assignment that explores your own personal philosophy!! :)
Gleiten: 2
WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOU? WHY ARE YOU?
Gleiten: 4
Who am I? Just another teenager struggling with existential questions... or something more?
Gleiten: 5
I guess I just have to reflect on my life.. Who am I? Who is Jesse?
Gleiten: 6
If I consider my values and influences, I am very family driven. Where I am lucky enough to be born into a very caring family that molded my values and morals that made me into the person I am today.
Gleiten: 7
What is my Identity? Well I would consider myself a very artistic an creative person, who always strives to push my creativity beyond it's boundaries, always trying to strive to be better.
Gleiten: 8
Multiple struggles with anxiety based on other's judgment. (Teenage Angst, you know what I mean.)
Gleiten: 9
However, I'm no stranger to struggle everyone is! whether it be through school, work, or any obstacles life throws at me life is full of hardships.
Gleiten: 10
To me, my struggles don't define me as a person. What defines me is how I take those osbtacles and overcome them. I am not without flaws but as long as I am always trying. Trying to be a better person than yesterday then I do see myself as a good person.
Gleiten: 11
I have developed and learned that my mistakes don't define me as a person, to never live with regret instead always trying to be best version of myself possible. Additionally, to never give up in the face of struggle. No matter what give something my best shot and know that I TRIED.
Gleiten: 12
How do I relate to the world? Well, I always try to be the best version of myself when I can be. I enjoy helping others and making being kindess a priority. Obviously the world is full of bigotry and hate, but just being a good person can go so far paying it forward even being able to make and entire person's day. That is what brings me the most happiness.
Gleiten: 13
Now What am I?? Let me think… What is human nature? Human traits and behaviour
Gleiten: 14
According to Descartes I am a thinking thing.. I have mind-body dualism. I know this is true through Descartes famous phrase “I think, therefore I am.”
Gleiten: 15
I have to be currently doubting my own existence to doubt that I currently exist, however because I am doubting my own existence I know that I exist.
Gleiten: 16
At the same time I am more than just my own ability to think. There are factors that shape my existence such as my appearance, my culture, my beliefs, etc.
Gleiten: 17
However, Descartes' philosophy brings me comfort and describes how I experience myself rather than just being a physical being, my mind acts as more of a stream of consciousness.
Gleiten: 18
If I look at Kant’s philosophy it has many things I can draw from to describe my human nature, I can use his Categorical Imperative “The Golden Rule” to describe what is and isn’t morally correct.
Gleiten: 19
It forces me and others to reflect on ourselves, on the idea that we should do unto others how they would treat us. To recognize our own flaws and improve ourselves.
Gleiten: 20
Kant’s philosophy speaks to me because it is something that sees morality as universal, and that free will is the same as will under moral laws.
Gleiten: 21
My identity is shaped by me being a Straight White Male who comes from a European background, originating from France and Italy.
Gleiten: 22
I recognize that this gives me privilege and doesn’t allow me to have the same experiences that others might.
Gleiten: 23
Even then, Kant’s framework helps, because it asks me to imagine a world that’s fair for everyone, not just for me. That’s a standard I try to live by.
Gleiten: 24
Now I have to think…. Why am I?
Gleiten: 25
What can provide me with purpose?? What is my purpose on this planet?
Gleiten: 26
To me. It's to be there when I can. To live every moment like it’s my last, living life to the fullest.
Gleiten: 27
If I consider my identity I am a catholic, where I should love and serve god, and love my neighbor.
Gleiten: 28
Similarly to Kant, I should follow the “Golden Rule” of being a kind person that treats others the same way I wanna be treated.
Gleiten: 29
If I have to consider the things that bring me happiness I look at Epicurus’s perspective on Happiness.
Gleiten: 30
Where Happiness is not something materialistic or something that comes with luxury, rather using the three beliefs of Epicureanism.
Gleiten: 31
1. We should find comfort in our friends 2. Freedom for fear or pain, finding our own inner peace. 3. Absence from physical pain, finding pleasure in simple things.
Gleiten: 32
These are the basis for myself finding happiness and inner peace.
Gleiten: 33
However, I know that I will die one day and that any moment could be my last. And that my memory will be remembered and passed down through the people around me.
Gleiten: 34
So why would I want my last moment to be bad? I want to be remembered through my best moments, never living with regret and living out of fear.
Gleiten: 35
“I should’ve done this, I should’ve done that.” That’s not the life I want to live.
Gleiten: 36
My purpose in life is to be there when I can.
Gleiten: 37
It sounds cliche, but the meaning of life is to live.
Gleiten: 38
I see life as a sort of heartbeat on a monitor, the line is constantly moving up and down. I will always face struggles and some days will be better than others.
Gleiten: 39
But I never want to live a constantly linear life, where nothing bad happens and it’s always good.
Gleiten: 40
Not letting myself feel those emotions, heartbreak, loss, tragedy, means I’m not human.
Gleiten: 41
The reason that I’m able to feel those emotions in the first place means that I was able to feel good in the first place.
Gleiten: 42
To link it back to the heart monitor metaphor, means that if that line isn’t moving up and down I flatline. I am no longer living.
Gleiten: 43
So no matter how difficult it gets for me, or how many obstacles I face. I will never give up, always trying my best and living my life.
Gleiten: 44
I want that memory of my last moment to be a good one, that I was there living my life to the fullest and following the categorical imperative.
Gleiten: 45
This philosophy is not originally mine, it comes from many influences that I’ve already listed
Gleiten: 46
Including movies such as A dog’s purpose and the green book, these were moments that stuck out to me.
Gleiten: 47
Where I reflected upon them and realized that they fit into my own personal philosophy.
Gleiten: 48
I hope that gives you an understanding of Who I am, What I am, and Why am I.
Gleiten: 49
Now I turn it back onto you, WHO ARE YOU? WHAT ARE YOU? WHY ARE YOU?
Gleiten: 50
THE END..?
Gleiten: 0
Hmm... I have to think about this.. What is the human condition? Human nature? My perspective on purpose?
