- However, collaborating with the generals only increased the crisis, as they became warlords and a power struggle erupted. This sent the message that loyalty to the generals was more important than the nation.
- Although Marius and all his efforts for the poor, Sulla was eventually the successor of the civil war.
- Following Sulla’s triumph, rose the First Triumvirate that consisted of Julius Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey. They had three leaders in order to keep the power evenly distributed and prevent corruption.
- People were warring inside the country, and having three leaders ensured that they could respond quickly in times of conflict. Julius Caesar got the western provinces, Pompey got Eastern provinces and Crassus received Asia Minor.
- Crassus died of natural causes.
- This power distribution between Julius and Pompey did not hold up for very long. Both would settle for nothing less than total control over Rome, which led to yet another civil war.
