The story starts with a guy named Paul Bäumer, our narrator, and his company resting behind the lines. They've just received double rations, and they are indulging in simple pleasures like smoking and playing cards. The peaceful scene contrasts sharply with the horrors they face on the front lines. Generational Divide we're introduced to Paul's classmates, young men barely out their teens, who enlisted under the influence of their nationalistic schoolteacher, Kantorek. And from that in listing, their lives took a change from the stress free life from the brutal reality of war.
