Welcome! You're going to learn about Earth's structures today, more specifically it's layers and how all of Earth's structures are related.
Earth is made up of several layers. Characteristic properties vary from layer to layer. There are physical and compositional layers.
The crust is a compositional layer; it's the outermost solid layer. The continental and oceanic crusts are the two types. The crust is made up of elements such as oxygen, silicon, and aluminum.
The mantle is between the core and crust; it's a region of hot, slow-flowing, solid rock. The mantle is denser than the crust, convection is the cause of differences in density caused by variations in temperature.
The core, below the mantle (the center of Earth), is the last compositional layer we'll talk about. Scientists believe it is mostly made up of iron and nickel. The core is about one-third of Earth's mass.
Those are the compositional layers, next are the physical layers. Each layer is categorized based off of if it's a liquid or solid, and how waves are transmitted.
The lithosphere is the outermost, rigid layer. It's divided into pieces called tectonic plates. The lithosphere is located at the crust and upper part of the mantle.
The mesosphere is the strong lower part of the mantle. Here rock flows slower than the asthenosphere.
The asthenosphere is where the tectonic plates move on top. It's a layer of weak or soft mantle that is made of rock that flows slowly.
The outer core is a liquid layer of Earth's core it's located beneath the mantle and it surrounds the inner core.
The inner core is the solid, dense center of our planet that extends from the bottom of the outer core to the Earth's core.
So how do all of Earth's structures relate to one another? This includes minerals, the rock cycle, earth's layers, and plate tectonics.
Well... the rock cycle is made up of rocks, rocks are naturally occuring solid mixture of one or more minerals.
And tectonic plate motions can move rock around. Rock beneath earth's surface can be exposed to rain and wind. Or rock on the surface can be buried.
Plate tectonics are related to earth's layers because they describe large-scale movements of Earth's lithosphere.
Now you know about Earth's layers and how all of Earth's structures are connected to one another.
