"I thought you'd like to know. The girls werein Belgium last week having a look at poor Reggie's grave, and they happened to come across your boy's. They're quite near each other, it seems.
This is important because it introduces the characters and also provides background information about the boss's grief and pain. Also this moment is important because this is when the boss starts to feel the pain of losing his son again. He opened up the wound and made him feel incredibly sad.

The reason why this scene is so important is because it highlights his pain and suffering. It showes how much of a shock it was when Woodifield mentioned his son. He was so sad, that when he tried to cry, he could not.
"It had been a terrible shock to him when old Woodifield sprang that remark upon him about the boy's grave."
Gleiten: 3
"Come on," said the boss. "Look sharp!" And he stirred it with his pen -- in vain. Nothing happened or was likely to happen. The fly was dead."
The reason why this scene is so important is because it shows how sadistic he is. He changed from being a kind guy, to a mean and sadistic person.
