  • I need to question Uta-napishti about the secret of life and death.
  • Why have you traveled so far?
  • Enkidu dreamed that the gods of heaven held a council and subjected him to death for killing Humbaba and the Bull of Heaven. Day by day, Enkidu began to wither away and dreamt that he went to the Underworld and to the House of Dust. However on the twelfth day, he passed telling Gilgamesh to not forget him and the memories they made.
  • 10. Gilgamesh Travels to Find Uta-napishti
  • Ah Gilgamesh, stop chasing sorrow. Life an death the god have established.
  • Gilgamesh was devasted and pulled the veil of his bride (Enkidu) over his face. The people of Uruk, the animals at the watering hole, the elders, and Shamat all mourned this loss. Everyone wept for Enkidu, and Gilgamesh tore at his hair and clothing. Grave goods gathered such as ivory, gold and lapis lazuli.
  • 11. Uta-napishti Tells Gilgamesh the Story of the Flood
  • Gilgamesh set out on a joruney to find Uta-napishti, he was the only one who knew the answer to immortality. For days Gilgamesh wandered, until he arrived at the great mountains. Two scorpions guarded the mountain pass. They question him and told him no mortal had crossed the mountains. Eventually, Gilgamesh was allowed to pass. After many leagues, he finally reached the sea.

  • What is the Underworld like?
  • I cannot tell you, for you will weep.
  • Gilgamesh met the tavern keeper, Siduri who told him he must talk to Urshanabi the boatman. When Urshanabi met Gilgamesh, he noticied how sullen his face was, and offered to ferry him across the waters to Uta-napishti. However, Gilgamesh had destoryed the only way across the water, so both of them fashioned poles to cross the water. When Gilgamesh met Uta-napishti, he told him all about Ishtar, Enkidu, and his long jounrey. Uta-napishti responded by telling Gilgamesh that he needs to let go of the past, and that no one can avoid death.
  • Gilgamesh asked Uta-napishti how he had acheived immortality. So, Uta-napishti told Gilgamesh his story. Uta-napishti was the only one to survive the Great Flood and was condemned to live forever in a far away place. Uta-napishti offered Gilgamesh immortality if he could stay awake for a week, which he failed at. Then Uta-napishti told Gilgamesh about a plant that could restore youth. Gilgamesh successfully got the plant but lost it after a snake took it while he rested his feet in water. Enkidu and Urshanabi returned to Uruk empty handed.
  • Gilgamesh told Enkidu not the wear new clothes in the Underworld for the gods of the Underworld would keep him there. Enkidu did not listen and was kept there. Shamash the Sun opened a hole in the roof of the Underworld and let the spirit of Enkidu float out. Gilgamesh and Enkidu embraced. Gilgamesh asked what the Underworld was like but Enkidu responded by saying he could not say as it was so gruesome he would weep.
