Germany was given to the allies once they won the war. The allies split Berlin. The soviet had East Berlin and the U.S, U.K, and France had West Berlin. The main goal was to help make the economy better because Berlin was very poor at the time
Truman speaks out
The U.S and U.K had plans to change the currency for West Berlin and the Soviets were upset that they were not being included in this plan. June 24, 1948 soviets restricted all access to West Berlin by blocking all railroads and roads. Stalin (left) was trying to convince West Berliners to come over to the East and in return they would receive food.
First flight
The families on the western side of Berlin had little to no food, but the Soviets were trying to influence families. Stalin (left) promised them food and other things but the western side refused to be under Russia's control.
Scared children in West Berlin
Truman (left) and administrators took less than 2 days to respond to the blockade because innocent lives were on the line. He declined that a forceful military response was not necessary. It was decided that Britain (Churchill on the left) and the U.S airlift supplies to West Berlin
The first plane took off on June 26, 1948 from bases in England and West Germany. The planes landed in West Berlin dropping off the first shipment of supplies.
As families of the West Berliners received their first drop of supplies. Children were scared because of the noise coming from the planes. It was thought about the previous bombing of Berlin. Children looked at their parents for support.
