  • After the war, Banting struggled to find work in Toronto, so he started a medical practice in London, Ontario. One sleepless night, while reading an article about the pancreas, he had a sudden idea — if he could isolate a substance from the pancreas, it might help treat diabetes. He quickly wrote his thoughts in a notebook before dawn.

  • Banting shared his idea with Professor J.J.R. Macleod, who gave him lab space and an assistant, Charles Best. Together, Banting and Best experimented on dogs to find the pancreatic extract that could control blood sugar. Their tests showed dramatic drops in glucose levels — proof that the idea worked.

  • In early 1922, Banting and his team injected insulin into a 14-year-old boy named Leonard Thompson, who was dying of diabetes. After several trials, Leonard’s condition improved rapidly. For the first time, diabetes was no longer a death sentence.
