  • Overthrow of Charles l
  • Charles I was unpopular because he believed in the divine right of kings. Parliament then passed the petition of rights which had limits on what the kings abilities were. He initially agreed to it, but then ignored it because he realized it limits his powers as king.
  • Restoration of the Stuart Monarchy
  • England got into a civil war in 1642 between the supporters of the king (Cavaliers) and the parliamentary forces (Roundheads). This was caused because there were complaints of king charles and his policies. Parliament won.
  • Glorious Revolution
  • Im on my way England!
  • The overthrow of King Charles I was caused because Cromwell purged parliament of any members that did not support him. What was left of the rump parliament lead to Charles being executed which left the majority of Europe horrified.
  • English Bill of Rights
  • It was about time we were subject to the same laws!
  • After Cromwell died in 1658, The son of Charles I, Charles II, took over and restored the monarchy. Parliament still had much power and continued to play an impoortant role in the government
  • In the Glorious Revolution, a group of english nobles invited dutch leader. William of Orange, to invade England. William started to make plans to invade England but then James started to realize what he was trying to do, so he sent his army to him. In the war there was almost no bloodshed, so thats why it was called the Glorious Revolution.
  • In the English Bill of Rights, it made everybody subject to the same laws, even the king or queen. It limits the power of Monarchs and forces them to make decisions that obey the laws of their state.
