In the 1780s, France's population was divided into three estates, the First Estate, which was the Roman Catholic Clergy, The 2nd Estate, which consisted of french nobility, and The 3rd Estate, the commoners. The 3rd Estate was excluded from from positions of power and was looked down upon by the upper estates. This angered the 3rd Estate and thus, inspired them to create the National Assembly and begin a revolution.

In October, 1789, a mob marched on Versailles and forced King Louis and his wife, Maria, to move to Tuileries. In 1791, they were again forced out of their home due to the revolution and were forced to go to Austria. During the trip there, they were apprehended at Varennes, France, and taken back to Paris, where he was forced to accept the constitution in 1791, and was reduced to a figurehead. In 1792, King Louis and his wife were arrested and imprisoned on charges of having counterrevolutionary intrigues with other foreign countries,, and was executed for treason.

Since 1792, France's revolution had been in military conflict with different European nations. In 1796, a solider named Napoleon Bonaparte was chosen to lead an invasion on England, Napoleon decided that France's naval forces were not prepared to go against Britain's superior forces so he proposed to invade Egypt instead to wipe out India trade routes with England. After achieving victory, France's naval unit was destroyed by British forces at the Battle of the Nile. In 1799, Napoleon was named one of three consultants, making him France's leading political figure.
1852 - Rise of Louis Napoleon

After Napoleon became a consul him and his forces defeated the Austrians and drove them out of Italy. Then, in 1802, Napoleon signed the Treaty of Amiens, which brought peace between England and France. From there, Napoleon began reforming France, he reinstituted buildings such as banks and schools, centralized the government, and supported science and the arts. His most significant accomplishment is the Napoleon Code, which is still used to this day. In 1804, Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of France.
The Bourbon Restoration is the period of time where Napoleon was abdicated, or revoked, and the Bourbon monarchs were restored to power and Louis XVIII became the king. But then, Napoleon returned to France and interrupted Louis' rule, but abdicated again, leading to the 2nd restoration and the rule of Louis' brother, Charles X. and a constitutional monarchy. Finally, reactionary policies and opposing liberals and moderates begun the July Revolution, thus, leading to the abdication of Charles X and the end of the Bourbon Restoration
Louis Napoleon, son of Napoleon I's brother, Louis Bonaparte, lived in exile for most of his life. In 1832, Louis' cousin, the Duke of Reichstadt, and Napoleon i's only son, died. Louis prepared himself to take claim of the throne, he took military training and studied economic and social problems, he published a pamphlet called "Reveries Politics" stating that only an emperor could give France glory and liberty. Convinced that he'd be popular due to his heritage, he put his ideas and beliefs into the public,. He failed, and was exiled to the United States.
