Storyboard-Text

  • It pertains to Barn Burning because in the story we guess that Abner will burn the de Spain barn down far before Sarty realizes this.
  • More specifically, in barn burning we see both dramatic irony and regular irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience or reader understands the implication and meaning of a situation onstage and foresees the oncoming disaster or triumph but the character does not.
  • Irony is a literary device in which a discrepancy of meaning is masked by the surface of language.
  • And older still, he might have divined the true reason: that the element of fire spoke to some deep mainspring of his father's being... (Faulkner 189).
  • “... pausing now without knowing he had ceased to run, crying ‘Pap! Pap!’...” (Faulkner 1190-191).
  • This shows irony because near the beginning Sarty doesn't care too much for his father. In fact he thinks about running away, but in the end he does care for him. He cares for him a lot and we see that when the gunshots are heard.
  • This quote shows dramatic irony because it displays Sarty's innocence and how if he was older he'd understand the situation how the audience understands it.
  • ...identical almost with the dozen others it had stopped before even in the boy's ten years (Faulkner 182).
  • This quote shows the irony that the family always seems to end up in the same situation. Getting chased out of town because Snopes did something bad.
