Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace are known for scientifically discovering the theory of evolution, through natural selection. This discovery was aided by fossil record, and comparative embryology.
Fossils are the remains of past life preserved in rock, soil or amber. Generally, the remains were once the hard parts of an organism, such as bones and shell. Fossils can provide information on the skeletal structures of past animals/species, therefore enabling us to compare this to evolved species today.
In some instances, the detailed reconstruction of the sequence of shapes across time has been done. The evolution of the horse is one illustration. The dawn horse (genus Hyracotherium), which existed more than 50 million years ago, was an animal the size of a dog with many toes on each foot and teeth suitable for browsing. The contemporary horse (Equus), which is the most recent version, is significantly bigger, has one toe, and has teeth adapted for grazing. The intermediate forms, along with numerous other extinct horse species that evolved in various directions and left no surviving progeny, are well preserved as fossils.
Overall we can see that Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallaces's discovery of the theory of evolution, proved by natural selection was provided evidence through fossil records and comparative embryology. These were very significant in their discovery.
CONCLUSION
Sometimes embryonic homologies reveal a tight evolutionary link between species that appear very different as adults. For instance, static crustaceans like barnacles bear little resemblance to free-swimming species like lobsters, shrimp, or copepods. However, barnacles go through a stage known as the nauplius, a free-swimming larval stage, that is distinctly similar to other crustacean larvae.
In the study of embryology, the science that examines the development of organisms from the time of fertilisation to birth or hatching, Darwin and his followers discovered evidence in support of evolution.Embryos show the difference in development in early stages of life for different types of species and animals.
