Vonnegut uses these scenes to show how ridiculous life would be if everyone was the same. In his story he says that everyone wears masks so nobody's face looks better than anyone else's. He also has people announce sporting events on tv but most of those people have difficulty speaking properly but no matter how bad they are they still get the job and everyone tells them good job. One of the difficult thing for people in this story is that they have to be exactly the same and that includes their weight and the people who weigh less than others have to where bags of weights. because of this the main character is tired but can't take out the weights because he fears everyone will do it and then they will all go back to the dark ages of when everyone was different.
