  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • One morning, Beth came downstairs before school and the news was on. The news anchors talked about how sustainability helps the Earth and that the Earth needed more help than ever! Beth had never heard of this before, but she wanted to help too.
  • On the way to school, Beth told her best friend, Zach about what she saw on TV. "Do you help the Earth by being sustainable Zach," Beth asked. "My parents make sure I turn off the water when I brush my teeth. But I don't know much more than that. You should ask Mr. Smith! I want to learn to be sustainable too!"
  • Beth got to school and ran to her teacher's desk to ask him about sustainability. "Mr. Smith, what can you tell me about sustainability? I saw on the news today that it can help the Earth. I didn't even know the Earth needed our help, but I want to do my part!"
  • Mr. Smith replied excitedly, "That's amazing that you want to do your part to save the Earth! Here's a list of some activities you can try today that will help the Earth. Let me know tomorrow how it goes!" Beth thanked her teacher and sat down to get ready for the school day.
  • Beth looked at the list once she got in her seat. Her family did have a garden in her backyard so she knew she wanted to get started right after school.

  • ............................
  • Beth couldn't wait to show the list of activities that Mr. Smith gave her! "There's four things for me to try and I'm going to do them all today," Beth told her friend proudly. "That's great," Zach replied, "maybe I can borrow the list tomorrow to try them!" Beth agreed to give Zach the list tomorrow, she wanted all of her friends to give sustainability a try.

  • At home, Beth took her dad into their garden and told him how she is trying to be sustainable. "My teacher said we could make a rainwater catcher for our plants. That way we don't always have to use water from the faucet to water our plants." Her dad loved that she was learning about sustainability and had the perfect idea for the first activity on the list.

  • Activity 1.If you have a garden, set up a rainwater catcher. This way when you water your plants, you won't have to always get water from the faucet.
  • The bucket already started collecting leftover water from the rainfall yesterday. Beth's chore is to water the plants every day, so once the bucket was full, she would use bucket water instead of faucet water.
  • Next on Beth's list was to create a compost system. She asked for her mom's help with this activity. Her mom remembered a way to make a compost system, and luckily they were already planning to replace their water jug that day.
  • Beth and her mom were so proud of what they made, they used the compost for food waste from that same day! "What does a food compost do," Beth asked. "By using a compost, the food waste will turn into soil that we can use for our garden! Instead of our food scraps wasting in the trash, we can reuse them!"
  • Beth had one more activity to try before bedtime. Number three on the list was to turn off the water while brushing her teeth. Her parent told her to do this already, but she always seemed to forget. Before brushing her teeth her mom told her that she should turn off the faucet because it is important to save water.
  • Beth was lying thinking about her day. She had a big feeling of pride that she was able to do her part in helping the Earth! And the activities were fun! The last activity on her list was to make sure her bedroom lights are turned off when she isn't there.
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • The notepad Mr. Smith gave her was left open so she would not forget to turn off her bedroom lights like she usually does! When she came downstairs, the news was still talking about the Earth being in trouble. Beth didn't understand. She thought she fixed the problem yesterday!
  • Mr. Smith replied excitedly, "That's amazing that you want to do your part to save the Earth! Here's a list of some activities you can try today that will help the Earth. Let me know tomorrow how it goes!" Beth thanked her teacher and sat down to get ready for the school day.
