Introduction / Exposition: The story opens on a sunny day on June 27, when the villagers gather for the annual lottery. The children in the town are playing and collecting stones, and the adults are chatting casually, waiting for the lottery to start. Mr. Summers, the unofficial leader of the village, prepares for the lottery, sets out the box, and makes cards that choose the destiny of the village people.

Initial Incident:The initial incident is when Mr. Summer tells everyone in the village that the lottery is about to happen so everyone can prepare. The village people put the stool in the center of the square and then put the black draw box on it readying for the lottery to happen.

Rising Action: After the villagers gather, the lottery begins, with each head of household (the men) drawing a card of paper from a black box. The townspeople are uncomfortable, especially Tessie Hutchinson, who arrives late and protests the lottery’s fairness. As Mrs. Hutchinson's family is singled out, her husband draws the slip that marks them as the "winners" and the once-friendly townspeople begin to act coldly. After Bill Hutchinson draws the slip with the black dot, the tension rises as each family members must draw again to determine who will be sacrificed. Mrs.Hutchinson, the one who had protested earlier, becomes frantic as it becomes clear her family is the victim of this year's lottery.
