- In response to the increase in military spending in the US, the Soviets also increased their military spending, but this came at the cost of the economy plummeting.
- Please! I don't have enough money to feed my family!
- It's okay comrade, as long as we have nukes we'll be okay
- In order to save the Soviet Union from collapse, Gorbachev instituted reforms such as glasnost and perestroika. In the end, these reforms weren't enough to save the USSR and actually quickened its demise.
- I will reform the Soviet Union bigger and better than ever!
- As the Soviet Union began to pull out of Afghanistan and Eastern Bloc countries, those European nations got rid of their communist governments and cut ties with the USSR. This led to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany.

- On April 1, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded. The incident was evidence that Soviet technology was old and obsolete.

- With the Warsaw Pact dissolved and the unrest of Soviet citizens, the USSR finally collapsed in 1991 and the Cold War had ended.
