Storyboard-Text

  • "Peter, stay at the gate" (2.5.20).
  • Act 2 Scene 5
  • "Now,good sweet nurse- O Lord, why lookest thou sad? Though news be sad, yet tell them merrily. If good, thou shamest the music of sweet news By playing it to me with so a sour face"(2.5.21-25).
  • "I am weary. Give me leave awhile. Fie, how my bones ache! What a jaunt have I!"(2.5.26-27).
  • Juiet and the NurseJuliet's Bedroom
  • " I would thou hadst my bones, and I thy news. Nay, come, I pray thee, speak. Good, good nurse, speak" (2.5.28-30).
  • Juliet anxiously waits for the nurse since she has left to meet Romeo, and waits for what he said to the Nurse. (Deception)
  • "Then hie you hence to Friar Lawrence' cell. There stays a husband to make you a wife... Hie you to church. I must another way, to fetch a ladder by the which your love Must climb a bird's nest soon when it is dark. I am the drudge and toil in your delight, But you shall bear the burden soon at night. Go. I'll to dinner. Hie you to the cell" (2.5.73-82)
  • "Hie to high fortune! Honest nurse, Farewell" (2.5.83).
  • The nurse tells Juliet that she feels “weary” , and asks her to give her “awhile” when in reality she is really nervous about what’s about to happen. She does this so that she would not have to reveal the truth of what Romeo told her.
  • This connects to the motif of deception since she tries to conceal her true emotions so that Juliet would not panic. She also does this to stall for some time while she tries to help Juliet safely escape so that she could get married to Romeo.
  • Through this particular scene, readers can see how Shakespeare likes to add tension in order to build to the climax that takes place later in the story, where Romeo and Juliet get married.
