  • MY WORLD BEFORE AND AFTER BUG
  • I'm not what people usually think of when they imagine a disabled person.
  • FREAK!
  • So no one's ever looked at me weird...
  • Come on, guys...
  • I fit in like everyone else...
  • I saved you guys a seat!
  • BLEGH
  • ...but that also meant I went through a lot by myself.
  • I felt like I lived a double life...
  • Do you want me to call your parents?
  • SPIRIT DAY THIS FRIDAY! WEAR YOUR SCHOOL COLORS AND SHOW OFF YOUR MUSTANG PRIDE!

  • but no matter how good the good times were...
  • ...the bad ones were really lonely.
  • And when things got worse my freshman year of college...
  • It got harder to pretend.
  • FRESHMAN ORIENTATION
  • WELCOME, CLASS OF 2022!
  • It got harder to hide.
  • People thought I was just lazy...
  • You can't stay in there all day!
  • Come in! The water's fine!
  • ...or that I just didn't care.
  • I became dependent on the few people who knew.
  • Just let me know if you have trouble reading my notes.
  • Before long, I couldn't do anything by myself...
  • BFF
  • Hey, do you still think you could bring me back some food from the dining hall?
  • ...until I came across a page on social media of a girl with my same condition, living independently with the help of a service dog.
  • You and 12.8K others liked this post
  • For the first time in a long time, I felt hopeful.
  • SERVICE ANIMALS
  • That's where Bug comes in.
  • I saved up until I could afford to call her my own...
  • ...and when she finally came home, it all felt worth it.
  • I spent every day that summer getting her ready for school.
  • HAVE A GREAT SUMMER, LIONS!
  • And finally, on my first day of sophomore year...
  • We pulled it off.
  • I felt like myself again.
  • And when I needed her, she was always there.
  • She saved me that day...
  • ...and every day since.
  • But for the first time in my life, I was visibly disabled.
  • People didn't believe she was mine.
  • Maybe she could train my dog too!
  • They thought I was faking it.
  • I bet she just likes bringing her dog everywhere.
  • Why do you have to make everything about you?!
  • It's like I was "too disabled" to be treated normally...
  • ...but "not disabled enough" to warrant empathy.
  • See? I told you––she's fine.
  • It felt like Bug and I against the world.
  • Sometimes, it still does.
  • Ultimately, I'd choose this over being a prisoner in my own body any day.
  • Ultimately, I choose me.
  • So I choose her.
  • And I'd do it a million times over.
  • THE END
