  • What did they do during the war?Did they get involved in the resistance?
  • The holocaust, one of the darkest times foranyone to experience. The Holocaust was an evolving process that took placethroughout Europe between 1933 and 1945. As civilized human beings, we fail tounderstand how events of such horror could have taken place, and how an idea soinhumanly warped could have spread like wildfire through an entire continent, instigating the systematic annihilation of millions of Jews.

  • In some ways, being a woman duringthe period of the Holocaust, had proved to be somewhat beneficial. At thesetimes, women were seen to be the ‘weaker’ or less capable sex. Compared to men whowere to be seen as the dominant leaders. This meant that secret police and theNazi party were less suspicious in the views of a women to have of any ‘unrulybehaviour’ that the men at this time would have been punished for.
  • How did they survive? Was it harder for women? If so, how?
  • In camps, Women also took part invarious other roles when it became a necessity for them to do so. Some smuggledexplosives during occasional attempts to attack the Nazis. If and when theywere captured, the women were courageous and brave enough to keep the names oftheir companions concealed, despite the extreme torture. Some women attackedguards and were immediately murdered, and escape attempts ended with similarconsequences. Actions such as these were extremely dangerous and risky becausethe price would not only be paid by the women themselves, but also by manyothers who were held hostage- they would be executed.
  • How did they survive? Was it harder for women? If so, how?
  • Women’s role in the resistance wasvery important and focused mainly on rescue. They mainly played smugglers andcaregivers for those that had gone into hiding, as well as those who had beenseparated from their parents or that had placed their children in hiding.
  • Appearance is an important aspectof a woman’s pride, more so than for men. When the Nazi’s removed all of theirhair along with their clothes, they stripped them of their womanhood along withtheir pride. Appearance is one of the main and most obvious characteristicsthat separates men from women, so when this was cold heartedly taken from them, they were purely grouped together as one race, one religion and one person. This was dissolution of their personalities.
  • The Nazi’s denied the women oftheir female rights, through rape and sexual attacks that were brutally carriedout. The Nazi’s attacked them by making them undress in public, touching andbeating them forcefully. During the time at the camps, the women were made toparade around naked, stripping them of any sense of integrity and wereconstantly hurt regardless of their poor health.
