  • The Monsters are Due on Maple Street Theme: Mankind is it's own Worst Enemy
  • He got his car started!
  • One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is that mankind is its own worst enemy. One example that suppourts this theme is when Les Goodman's car randomly started(pg. 75) and the residents of Maple Street start to turn on him. This shows that just because his car started, the residents are suspousious of him and thinks he is the monster. Another example is when Charlie turns on Steve for having a radio set(pg.82). This shows that Charlie thinks he is communicating with the monsters, even though it's just a ham radio set, Charlie would have never asked or thought that the ham radio set was used to communicate with aliens and now just because a coulple lights turned on and off he thinks that Steve is commuinacating with aliens. Lastly, is when Charlie shot Pete Van Horn(pg.82). This explains that the fear in him makes him pull the trigger and all the blaming other people and turning on each other leads to their freind dead. In conclusion, The theme of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is mankind is its own worst enemy.
