The narrator lives in the old man's house and takes care of him. At first, he loved the old man, but over time, he began to feel an irrational hatred towards him. He said it was all because of the man's eye that he calls the "vulture" eye. He then began to conceive a plan to murder the old man, all because he became insane.

The narrator watched the old man sleep for 7 nights; he would use the light from a lantern pointed at the old man's eye. He waited because the narrator couldn't kill the old man. After all, his "vulture" eye was closed. On the eighth night, the old man woke up due to the narrator's presence in the room, this the narrator took the chance and killed the old man. He then dismembered the old man's body and hid it under the wooden tiles.

“Yes! Yes, I killed him. Pull up the boards and you shall see! I killed him. But why does his heart not stop beating?! Why does it not stop!?”
The neighbors report the odd sounds, and the police come to the house to investigate. The narrator acts like nothing's wrong and says the old man went on vacation and isn’t home. He invites the officers in and pretends nothing is wrong, but soon he hears a loud sound that nobody else can hear; it's the old man’s heartbeat, which makes no sense since he is already dead. Disturbed by the reminder of his crime, he ultimately confesses to killing the man since he couldn’t escape the incessant pounding he alone could hear.
