Enki said this promise because he knew that An will like that Adapa would stay on heaven because of his great power sot to stay there he needs to eat the fruit of inmortality.

And that day, Adapa did as Enki did, he went to heaven were An was and he didn´t received anything of food.
Anu was confused when Adapa refuse to eat the fruit but he accepted. This is the story of why humans are morta.
Dear Adapa,I am impressed of the power that you have. You destroy the south wind, that is one of the most difficult things ever, but I want to ask if you want this fruit for your trip back to Eridu.
