- I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. For his gold; I had no desire. I think it was his eye, a pale, blue eye with a film over it.
- Every night, about midnight, I turned open the latch of his door and opened it- oh! so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient enough for my head, I shone a lantern into his room all closed, closed, so that no light showed out. I waited awhile then opened the lantern just enough to shine light only on the eye. I was creeping toward his bed, ever so slowly, when it creaked. He woke up.
- Who's there?
- a few hours later....
- I did not hear him lie down for a whole hour. When I waited a long time, very patiently, I shone the tinniest bit of light form the lantern. I then saw the eye, wide open, staring at me. I grew furious.
- Then, I heard it stop. I chopped off the limbs and buried him under the floor boards.
- I turned the bed on top of him. I was sure he was dead, but still, I heard the heart.
