King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette had lots of power and money in France. The clergy and the nobles (from the first and second estate) also had power and money.
The Third estate was made up of lower class peasant farmers. They had very little money, no land and no power. They made up 97% of the population.
1788 was a bad year for weather. It started off as with a massive hail storm in July, destroying all the crops all over France. This was then followed by one of the coldest winters. After this, there was no rain at all, and finally there was a massive flood that ruined all the farmland.
This meant that majority of the third estate went hungry and died due to starvation. There was also rumour that the First and Second Estate were hoarding bread. This made the peasants very angry.
On the 5th of October, the peasants of France marched all the way to the Palace of Versailles, protesting for their rights. Among them were the fearsome poiossardes, with their long knives and muscular form. They stood there all night until eventually..
They broke in! The queen ran out of her room to her husband, barely escaping the poiossardes. When they found her bedroom, the savaged it, ripping the sheets with their knives.
