  • While the Western states gave their women the right to vote with little issue, the South had a far less eager approach to the idea. Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana were some of these states that most strongly opposed the movement.

  • Fine, Fine! Alright, you can vote. I guess...
  • 20 states had already given women the right to vote before the 19th Amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920. Despite the Amendment being successfully ratified, many states still opposed it and didn't officially ratify until far after it was passed. Mississippi, for example, didn't ratify until 1984.

  • Today, the thought of women not having the right to vote is unthinkable. Women play such a large role in our society that not having them have such basic human rights seems barbaric. Women today can do so much more than they could in 1840. They can vote, own property under their own name, gain custody of their children in the events of separation, keep their own wages, and generally do anything a man could do. We have come a long way in society, ad we have the first members of the Women's Suffrage organization to thank.
