Act 3 begins with Hawthorne, Danforth, Herrick, Hale, Giles, and Martha in the court room while Cheever and Parris are entering. Martha Corey has been accused of witchcraft and her husband Giles Corey is trying to defend her name.
Susanna Walcott, Mercy Lewis, Betty Parris, and Abigail enter the court room. After Abigail denies Mary Warrens confession, the girls pretend that Mary is attacking them.
Proctor admits he committed adultery and if Elizabeth tells them the truth about it, she will be found as an innocent and honest person. She ends up denying it to save Proctor’s name, however she is now considered a liar.
Act 4 begins with Tituba and Sarah Good in a prison cell talking about how they are going to Barbados. Barbados is representing heaven because they are about to be executed.
Elizabeth and Proctor are then brought together and proctor asks for forgiveness and asks whether he should confess or not. Quote: “John, it come to naught that I should forgive you, if you’ll not forgive yourself. It is not my soul, John, it is yours”(Miller 136).
John agrees to confess, but he refuses to name any names and then is reluctant to sign the confession. He decides he can't go through the rest of his life after signing his name into disgrace in this permanent way. He snatches the signed paper away at the last minute and rips it to shreds. Quote: “How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name”(Miller 143)!
