The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street Theme: Suspicion Causes Destruction.
One of the main themes in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling is suspicion causes destruction. Here, I will be giving evidence and reason on why this is a appropriate theme for this story. From the story, it is shown," maybe you better tell us. Nothing's working on this street. Nothing. No lights, No power, no radio. (And then meaningfully; nothing except on car- yours!)" This is Don speaking. How does this quote cause destruction? Don is being suspicious of Goodman because only his car started, which led to destruction, and rains of accusations. Another thing is it says is," Go ahead, Steve, what kind of radio set you working on? I never seen it. Neither has anyone else. What you talk to on that radio? And who talks to you?" This is Charlie speaking. This quote supports the theme because Charlie is being overly suspicious over a radio. A RADIO!!! In this story, Charlie is the one making the most accusations toward the residents of Maple Street, when he could just work as a team. Here's another example of Charlie that adds up to the theme." Charlie swings the gun around to point it towards the sidewalk. The dark figure continues to walk towards them. Charlie slowly raises the gun as the figure gets closer and closer and he suddenly pulls the trigger." This shows how Charliee chooses to pull the trigger instead of being patient and find out who it really is, which of course it was Pete Van Horn. These factors add up to why suspicion causes destruction is the appropriate theme for this story.
