- maria gopper mayer she made important discovery's about the nuclear structure. one of only 2 woman to win a Nobel prize in physics. in 1948 she would publish her first paper detailing evidence for the nuclear shell model which accounts for many properties of atomic nuclei . she was born 1906 in kattowittz at four her family moved to Göttingen in 1946 she was employed half time at university of Chicago's institute for nuclear studies and half time at Argonne national laboratory
- jensen and goppert mayer won the nobel prize in 1963 for their work on the shell model. maria gopper mayer was appointed to a fulll proffersoship at the univerty of california in 1960 suffered a stroke and died in 1972

- in 1946 she began working with edward teller on a project to determine the orgin of elements the work involved list of isotope abudances it became clear that nuclei with 2,8,20,28,50,82,126 protons or nuetrons were especially stable this observasation led to her suggest a shell structure for nuclei analogous to electron shell structure in atoms

- the work concluded and suggested a shell structure in atoms in the nuclear shell model each nucleon moves in a central potential well created by other by other nucleons just as the electrons orbit a potential well created by the nucleus in the atomic shell model.
- in august 1948 her first paper summarizing the evidence for a shell model of the nucleus was physical review. she is now able to calculate energy levels and magic numbers.
