No way that's not fair it hurts our economy! I'm going to nullify that law!
In the 1830s the federal government, led by president Andrew Jackson had put tariffs on imported goods. This angered the southern states and South carolina threaten to nullify the federal law because it hurt their economy

Since south Carolina and other states are threatening to reject the law you might have to step in!
I am ready to force them to follow they law!!
South Carolina, led by John C. Calhoun, argued that states had the right to nullify federal laws they believed were unconstitutional. President Jackson did not agree with this. He sent troops to South Carolina and asked congress to pass "Force bill" which allowed him to use military force on any state if necessary.

The crisis was peacefully solved. Henry Clay created a compromise bill that slowly lowered the rate of the tariff. South Carolina stopped its threat of rejecting the law. This caused tension between state rights and the federal government. This would later be a cause of the civil war.
