Son, I managed to escape slavery but even freedom didn't safety. I spent my life hiding, fearing someone would take me or my family back to a life of chains.
In the mines, I was treated less than a human. I was nothing, prison made it even worse. Worked like a slave just because of the color of my skin.

Moving North, I thought things would be better. But even there, people looked at me differently. Finding work was a hassle just because of how dark my skin was, it was a fight every day.
I tried fighting against that. I wanted to stand up for us, but seeing cops beat my friends, seeing us locked up for speaking out. I realized its a never-ending cycle.

I tried to give my family freedom, but all I passed down was fear. My children grew up knowing they'd be seen as less.
And it does, I tried escaping and building a better life but I couldn't. I wanted Sonny to grow up proud and happy in Harlem but even there, he couldn't escape it
It's like were born fighting battles you all already fought. I feel the weight of what you went through and it still holds me down to this day. Racism is a lasting obstacle that cannot be overcame.
That fear stays. After prison, I saw how they trap us in the same system. It's like a curse that keeps coming back.
