- Since we'll be sitting next to each other for the next 5 hours we might as well get to know each other. I'm Isabel and I'm originally from Cuba but we became refugees and built a boat to come to the USA. I live in Miami right now.
- Woah! That's crazy! My name is Josef and I'm originally from Germany. We tried to leave during WW2 on the St Louis but we unfortunately were not allowed into Cuba. A very kind police officer broke the news and sent us back. Me, my mom, and sister were among the people sent to France, where I live today! It was a very dangerous journey and I sometimes felt like the only adult. Can you tell me more about your journey?

- Yes, of course! I think that police officer may have been my grandfather! He was telling us on the makeshift boat to the US. I also sometimes felt like the only adult. I was the only one to jump out of the boat when someone went overboard to help them. The journey was very dangerous too. We almost got hit by an oil tanker! We drifted into the shipping lanes and it was coming straight for us! We got the engine running in the nick of time but we were still sloshed around and that's when I had to jump out. It was crazy. What about you?
- That's insane! I also often felt like the only adult. One of these times was when I had to watch my little sister Ruthie all by myself because my mother had taken the sleeping medication meant for my father who was in the concentration camp, Dachau, and had so much PTSD where he wouldn't leave our cabin! He eventually jumped overboard and was the only one of us sent to Cuba. He died before I could ever see him again. When we got to France, we were chased by the Nazis all through the woods. I would've been sent to a camp if they caught us. It was very hectic and dangerous.

- Yeah! It's a small world huh? If we don't happen to see each other again have an amazing life in your new home!
