  • Hey John, would you like to come have dinner?
  • Sure.
  • Hey, why aren't you going in the lift?
  • I have a phobia of closed spaces, I don't want to go in the lift...
  • Would you rather take the stairs?
  • That would be much better!
  • Have you considered trying to control your phobia?
  • I would like to, but I'm not sure how..
  • John has Claustrophobia, one of the most common phobias. Other common phobias include Acrophobia (fear of heights) and Trypanophobia (fear of needles).
  • Maybe you should slowly expose yourself to your phobia, and get used to dealing with it.
  • Sounds like a good idea, but a bit scary!
  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift is a way to dodge the situation which John wants to avoid. This is a short-term way of dealing with the phobia. Avoiding the phobia is what many people do when they are confronted by one.

  • Johns friend is suggesting for John to consider long-term ways of dealing with his phobia. That way, in the future he may be able to complete tasks without being affected by his phobia.
  • The friend is suggesting a form of exposure therapy, a research proven method of dealing with phobias and PTS. It is generally considered the best way of controlling phobias.
