The integration of the NCAA began in then 1916 Rose Bowl where Brown University with one black player on the team played the Washington State. However the first integrated Bowl game in the South wouldn't take place until 1948 when SMU played Penn State in the Cotton Bowl.

On 29 Nov 1969 the all-black team of Florida AM play the nearly all white team of the University of Tampa. The 45K sell out crowd was the largest intergerated event at the time.. Many Southerns believed a black playercould be a better athlete but no way could be smarter or coach better. Florida AM won the game 34-28. UoT head coach Fran Curci stated "we were outplayed and out coached"

12 September 1970 when the last NCAA bastion of segregation was finally torn down. University of Souther California defeated the University of Alabama on its home field 42-21, lead by QB Jimmy Jones and Sam Cunningham, both black players. The following day Alabama Coach Bear Bryant asked the UoA Board of Trustees to be able to recurit players regardless of color. Legend has it Coach Bryant stated "Jones and Cunningham did more for integration in one night than many had done in years"
